IsoFresh FAQ

How is IsoFresh Balancing Vaginal Gel Different Than a Douche?

IsoFresh is a vaginal freshening gel – not a douche! Douching involves completely washing your vagina with a liquid, many of which contain harsh chemicals (like paraben preservatives). Douching disrupts the vaginal ecosystem – washing out the good bacteria as well as the bad bacteria, and can increase the rates of vaginal infections, like bacterial vaginosis and yeast infections. IsoFresh is a gel that is inserted the vagina.

It has the same pH as a healthy vagina and supports the vagina’s self-cleaning mechanisms. It is paraben-free and is isotonic, which means that the salt concentration of the gel is the same as healthy vaginal tissue. Unlike many douches and freshening gels that are hypertonic, IsoFresh will not dehydrate vaginal cells. Instead, IsoFresh keeps vaginal cells properly hydrated.

Why Choose a Douche Alternative?

Although doctors advise against douching, many women still feel the urge to get that “clean” feeling. Washing out your vaginal mucus “armor”, however, results in 5-8 times higher HIV and STD infection rates. Without mucus protection, vaginal cells have been found to be more rapidly infected by the HIV virus. (Shen et al., 2011).

The National Institutes of Health warns women against douching because of increased risk of cancer, infection, and infertility in women who douche. IsoFresh is a pure, simple, and safe natural douche alternative with ingredients to support self-cleaning. Don’t Wash Your Vagina – help your vagina wash itself.

Will IsoFresh Help With Smells Associated with Bacterial Vaginosis?

IsoFresh is intended to help maintain a healthy vaginal pH (~4.5), and support a healthy vaginal ecosystem (that is a favorable balance of good bacteria to bad bacteria), both of which help support the vagina’s “self-cleaning” mechanisms.

In doing so, IsoFresh helps to eliminate that unwanted feminine odors that are sometimes caused by bacterial vaginosis and yeast infections. If you have recurring bacterial vaginosis, please be sure to see your doctor.

What Causes Unwanted Feminine Odor?

Unwanted feminine odors are often produced by odor causing bacteria that flourish in your vagina when your vaginal pH is too high. Your vaginal pH should be about 4.5 (the same pH as your favorite red wine!), but many common activities such as intercourse, menstrual bleeding and sweating, can cause your pH to increase. Elevated pH can cause odor-causing bacteria to grow.

How Does IsoFresh Help Manage Unwanted Vaginal Odors?

Unwanted feminine odor often occurs when your vaginal pH is too high, which allows odor-causing bacteria to flourish.

IsoFresh Balancing Vaginal Gel is pH matched to your heathy vagina, so it helps maintain your vaginal pH at a healthy level (~4.5). This helps to ensure that odor-causing bacteria don’t grow.

What Should My Vaginal pH Be?

A healthy vagina has a pH of about 4.5. But, before we go too much further, an explanation of what pH is might be helpful. pH is a measure of acidity and alkalinity. The pH of liquid or substance is measured on a scale from 0-14. The lower the number, the more acidic the substance.

The higher the number the more alkaline the substance. With a pH of 4.5, a healthy vagina would be considered slightly acidic. This acidic environment helps your vagina maintain a proper balance between good and bad bacteria.

How Often Should I Use IsoFresh?

Use IsoFresh every three days or so, or anytime you want to feel more confident about your vaginal freshness.

What to Expect When Using IsoFresh?

A healthy vagina “self-cleans” by exfoliating old cells and bad bacteria. Because IsoFresh supports your vagina’s “self-cleaning” and rebalancing mechanisms, some women see an odorless, white discharge (looks a bit like wet toilet paper) up to 24 hours after application. This discharge is made up of exfoliated cells and is expected and normal, and the quantity of discharge you see following each application of IsoFresh will decreases with regular use of the product.

Women who have a very high vaginal pH (some menopausal women, women with vaginal imbalance) may notice a warm or even mild burning sensation when IsoFresh BioGel is first applied. This sensation will lessen as the vaginal pH becomes more balanced.  Additionally, these women may notice even more of the white exfoliation discharge as the vaginal lining cells turn over to reestablish balance.

Can I Use IsoFresh While I am Trying to Conceive?

IsoFresh Balancing Gel can be helpful to women who are trying to conceive. The increased exposure to semen during the fertile period can tax the vagina’s self-cleaning and balancing mechanisms. If your vaginal ecosystem is healthy, chances are it can regain pH balance back to a low acidic pH (~4.5 pH) on its own. But anything that disrupts our hormone system (PCOS, medications, stress, toxins, smoking, and weight changes) can make it harder for the vaginal ecosystem to bounce back. Constant exposure to a neutral pH (~7 pH) can eventually overwhelm the acidic environment and lead to unwanted feminine odors and vaginal infections.

IsoFresh gives the vagina extra help to attain a healthy pH level between fertile periods so you can move forward on your journey to conception and a healthy pregnancy. And, remember, as you approach ovulation, the pH of your vagina naturally increases due to the production of fertile quality cervical fluid, which has a pH of close to 7. IsoFresh should not be used during your fertile window, the 4 or 5 days immediately preceding ovulation.

What Are The Ingredients in IsoFresh?

IsoFresh is a water-based formulation, containing:

  • Lactic acid, a naturally occurring acid produced by friendly bacteria living in the vagina, helps maintain the pH of the vaginal ecosystem at around 4.5.
  • Sodium lactate is the sodium salt of lactic acid, which helps keep the pH of the vagina in the desired range.
  • Sodium chloride is salt – just like the salt you use on your food. It is included in IsoFresh to ensure that IsoFresh is 100% isotonic.
  • Xylose is a sugar that provides a building block for the formation of protective natural mucus and energy for healthy bacterial function. The xylose in IsoFresh is derived from raspberries.
  • Sodium hydroxide is a pH adjusting agent, used to ensure that the pH of IsoFresh is about 4.2-4.4 – the same pH range as a healthy vaginal ecosystem.
  • Clary sage has natural antibacterial activity – this helps to preserve the product naturally, meaning that IsoFresh does not require harsh chemical preservatives like parabens
  • Phenethyl alcohol is a naturally occurring substance found in roses that helps preserve IsoFresh.
  • Caprylyl glycol is a hydrating compound derived from caprylic acid — a natural fatty acid found in palm and coconut oils. This ingredient along with phenethyl alcohol have antimicrobial activity and are used in “self-preserving” formulas, so that harsh chemicals like parabens can be avoided.
  • Carbomer is a thickening ingredient
  • Cetyl hydroxyethylcellulose is a stabilizing ingredient
